Our goal was great printed design.
Whirlwind Print was born
Many moons ago a small graphic design agency was formed by the Cester family in Melbourne. The year was 1996. The goal was great design and Whirlwind Design was created. Their passion for print was soon apparent. They wanted great service, quality products and a fast turnaround time and when they couldn’t find it, what else can you do, but build it yourself!
The company has gone from strength to strength, driven by a family passion for print and a commitment to strive to deliver the best service and the best products in the print industry.
Still owned and operated by the Cester family (bringing with them a whole host of print passionate people too!), we have the Whirlwind Print of today, fast moving, quality & service driven and providing complete print solutions.
Onwards and upwards!
1996 – The Cester family open a small graphic design business in Melbourne, Whirlwind Design
1998 – Whirlwind begin gang printing and dealing directly with print manufacturers
2000 – Whirlwind enters the digital colour copy and large format poster markets
2001 – The Sydney office opens in Surry Hills
2002 – The print manufacturing facility in Blackburn, Victoria opens increasing our print offerings further
2003 – Melbourne office relocates to Camberwell to facilitate the ever expanding team
2004 – Whirlwind Print is ranked 43rd fastest growing company in Australia by Business Review Weekly
2005 – The print facility more than doubles its capacity and produces the majority of its products in-house
2006 – Both Melbourne and Sydney offices relocate to larger offices to accommodate growth
2007 – To accommodate escalating production demands manufacturing relocates to a 6000sqm manufacturing purpose developed facility in Knoxfield Victoria
2008 – Whirlwind Print remains a privately owned and family run business, employing a staff of 151 people, continuing to grow and still reaching for the stars…
2009 – Bringing together manufacturing with sales and support, the Hartwell offices merge with manufacturing at the Knoxfield facility
2010 – New stock selector available for customers to showcase in house stock options and finishes and is awarded Silver Medal at the Victorian Print Awards
2011 – Launches new customised and integrated online system for clients for a much improved web ordering experience
2015 – Reached the 1 million print jobs milestone
2017 – Purchased Australia’s first MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution print embellishment machine
2018 – Installed new Horizon SmartSlitter to expand short-run finishing options and added Soft Touch laminate films
2019 – New Sydney office, new website launch, and major focus on simplification of internal systems and customer satisfaction processes

Operating a fully coordinated colour management system that guarantees colour control from file validation and optimisation to printing; our state-of-the-art digital workflow systems move your job around the production floor in order to create the finished product. Computer integrated processing data remains one step ahead of each print job at all times.
All elements of the system have fully functional disaster recovery or business contingency plans in place. We operate 24 hours 6 days a week and even 7 if required.
Our core product range includes flyers, posters, point of sale, stationery, booklets and promotional items. Whirlwind has perfected offset printing to optimize paper usage, reduce environmental impact and improve productivity and thereby, maintain a value for money and competitive service. A large range of quality standard and environmental stocks are indented to further reduce the cost of paper and to provide maximum choice for you.
When it comes to the distribution of your finished print job, at Whirlwind we have the ability to store, collate, pack and distribute your products around Australia. We strive to deliver on time every time using our preferred partner network.

Our people are enthusiastic and dedicated bunch, all driven by a passion for print – from account management through to our production team and all support groups. Its about working together – we know that two heads are better than one.
Whirlwind employs approximately 140 people throughout the multi state operations and through the provision of ongoing training, personal and professional development opportunities, we ensure all employees maintain a customer driven attitude and determination to improve their performance levels.
Once you work with us you will have a dedicated account manager who will be your central point of contact for all your print work. Our account management teams are trained and experienced professionals in all facets of print and are only too happy to assist with your printing requirements. But it doesn’t stop there. AS/NZS ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems
Whirlwind Print gained the ISO9001 certification in 2007 and remains fully compliant.
ISO 9001 is an international standard that sets out the requirements for a quality management system and assurance. It helps businesses and organizations to effectively document the quality system elements to be implemented, to maintain an efficient quality systems and to improve customer satisfaction.
The ISO9001:2015 Quality Management Systems provides us with a risk based awareness when developing our processes. This enable us to :
- Provide our customers with the confidence that our processes are developed, assessed and continually reviewed for effectiveness and efficiency to meet applicable regulatory and customers requirements.
- Enhance customer satisfaction and expectations
- Achieve continual improvement of its performances in pursuit of it’s quality objectives to benefit the organisation and its customers.
At Whirlwind Print, manufacturing processes are developed and documented to conform to the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Standards.
Internal audits are planned and conducted to maintain not only compliance but also for continuous improvement. Our certification (triennual) and surveillance audits (annually) are undertaken by a third party certification body ensuring independent assessment of our certification.
Product quality is monitored at each stage of the manufacturing process. A quality control checklist is completed at the end of each stage of the production process.
Certification to ISO9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Standards provides assurance to our customers, suppliers and the local community that we are committed to maintaining and continuously improving our quality standards beyond simply compliance to the requirements of the printing industry.
ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems
ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.
Whirlwind Print achieved this standard since 2007 and remains fully compliant. Our business is externally audited by a 3rd party certification body to ensure we meet the accreditation requirements.
To maintain our accreditation we must ensure there are processes to:
- Minimise harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and
- Achieve continual improvement of our environmental performance.
- Have documented information on processes and outcomes
Green Printing Process
- Our production process includes 100% use of computer to plate technology, which means no film and no silver chemicals.
- We recycle 100% of our aluminium plates, at least 95% of all cardboard, computers, monitors, glass, ink tins, paper containers and drink bottles, polythene packaging and timber pallets. In terms of paper alone that’s approximately 33 tonnes per week.
- We select paper stocks from sustainable timber resources which are bleached using Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) technology. We offer a premium range of 100% recycled paper stocks ideal for high quality printing.
- A rigorous paper procurement policy which specifies suppliers with environmentally-focused ethics and paper stocks from sustainable forest material.
- Paper wastage is reduced by providing an on-line proofing service, and by optimising our paper use with Metrix software. Our offset printing technique not only reduces paper wastage but more efficiently uses energy.
- Our laminator has been modified to operate with completely recycled water saving 42,000 litres of water a year. Water saving technology fitted to our CTP machinery has reduced water requirements by 67% – saving 600 000 litres of water annually.
- 50% of our CMYK inks we use are based on a mixture of soy and linseed vegetable oils (excludes metallics).
- Our printing process operates alcohol-free.
- All our cardboard packaging is 100% recycled board.
- We fitted our new manufacturing facilities at Knoxfield, with environmentally-friendly flooring and work surfaces and recycled materials.
AS/NZS 4801: 2001 Health and Safety Management Systems
At Whirlwind Print we are committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, contractors and visitors on site.
The company makes every reasonably practicable effort to prevent accidents, protect employees, contractors and visitors on site from injury and promote the health, safety and welfare of all employees.
The company makes available appropriate resources to ensure that it complies in all respects with the relevant occupational health and safety legislation, regulatory requirements and industry standards to ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
Our certified safety management system is focused on supporting and enforcing policies and procedures which will protect our employees, contractors and visitors on site and make Whirlwind a safe place to work in, now and into the future.
ISO 12647 is currently the standard most serious printing specification are based upon.
Managing the use of colour and ensuring reliability is at the heart of Whirlwind Print’s expertise. When colour conveys so much it is important we get it right.
That is why we operate a coordinated colour management system that requires colour quality management from proofing through to printing.
Whirlwind Print is compliant to ISO 12647-2 certification and completes testing at regular intervals to maintain certification.
What does this mean?
Well, systems certified to international standards means print jobs by Whirlwind Print have colour consistency and improved colour quality.
We are proud of our standards investing considerable time and resources into attaining them and making sure we remain compliant. It’s one of the things that sets us apart from our competition and reinforces how passionate we are about all things print.
What it means for you, the customer? A guarantee that your print job will be of the highest quality.
To ensure the colour standard is maintained and improved, Whirlwind’s colour technology will be monitored regularly by a an external independent ISO specialist checking across production of press sheets, test charts, platemaking, proofing and lighting.
While some variation between gang print runs may occur, adoption of this specification puts all runs within internationally certified tolerances. It further helps reinforce the objectivity in our colour control workflow.
Those requiring exact colour matches are encouraged to opt for a Whirlwind Print’s commercial run, in which an Epson digital proof can be supplied to ensure colour accuracy.
As colour continues to challenge the printing industry, we will continue to maintain our presence as a front runner to ensure we provide our clients with colour that meets international standards time and time again.

We run one of the true real time electronic planning board systems that show available capacity at any one point on any one operation. It gives us the ability to give the most responsive answers to our clients on tight deadlines by understanding the consequences of taking on the unimaginable.
This manufacturing capability is supported by a series of enterprise level software products that cover the gamut of production, from initial customer interaction, order entry via multiple service channels, through all facets of the production cycle and distribution.
At Whirlwind we provide the tools needed to help your planning process, from scheduled deadlines and turnaround times to upfront pricing and delivery schedules.
Our staff will guide you through the planning stage in order for your print job to move seamlessly through the printing process.
From the moment your files arrive with us the preprint team begin to run through an extensive check list of technical issues that may impact on our ability to produce a first class product for you.
These checks include looking for those little problems such as bleed, ink densities, embedded fonts and image resolution.
Then your files are double checked by the best ripping technology on the market – just to be safe.
Your artwork is transferred from our computer straight onto our plates (this is called computer to plate production) using the best thermal imaging technology available. Thermal imaging allows us to dramatically enhance details rendition and produce near photographic images – in short, it makes your job look great.
We use state-of-the-art digital workflow systems to move your job around the production floor and create your finished print product.
Computer integrated processing data remains one step ahead of your job at all times. It takes care of everything from telling our presses how to set their ink ducts through to setting the exact measurements for our guillotines to trim your job.
Printing is only half the story. It is those finishing touches that make all the difference and Whirlwind offers a wide range of finishing options that will help bring print jobs to life.
Sealing varnishes on all coated stocks, scoring wheels on our folding machines, and in-house finishing services are just a few examples of how we go that little bit further to provide our customers with the best possible results.
